Insects and Spiders - non-native

Mediterranean katydid (Phaneroptera nana) on Sep 14, 2026

Description of specimen

Submitter has sample

Hopefully im correct but I've seemed to have captured a Mediterranean Katydid. I compared its calling songs against the native species and they dont seem to match.

Currently I'm taking care if it just in case I'm wrong... I named it Appleplum.

Commentary

Avatar of commenter Thank you for your report! From these photos I can't tell whether this is a Mediterranean katydid or a Fork-tailed bush katydid. The exotic is established in the valley at least as far south as Albany. There have not been any reports of damage by Mediterranean katydid. You can let it go or continue to keep it as a pet.
