Insects and Spiders - invasive

Large Yellow Underwing (Noctua pronuba) on Sep 18, 2026

Description of specimen

Submitter has sample

I couldn’t quite see the underwing portion but I noticed this moth laying eggs on the screen. I wanted to do some digging on the kind and someone from Reddit said it was a Large Yellow underwing.

If this is true I’m considering destroying the eggs if it is indeed invasive but I want to make sure first.

Commentary

Avatar of commenter Thank you for your report! Yes, you are correct that this is the European invasive species. They are well-established in Oregon, but the caterpillars are damaging cutworms so keeping the local population down might help your garden.
