Land Plants - non-native

Goutweed (Aegopodium podagraria) on Jul 3, 2012

Submitter has sample

Description of specimen

The plant looks very similar to Queen Anne's Lace. You can see in the attached photos how the plant has marched across well into my ceanothus hedge from the fence line 20 feet away. As I stated above, it already strangled two of them which I had to replace last summer. The entire area is now covered with black plastic until I can figure out a way to get rid of this plant. I have had to resort to the most potent pesticides I can find, unfortunately. Every landscaper or garden center that I have talked to tells me they get complaints all the time from people who planted this thinking it was "pretty". If garden centers in Oregon are selling this, they need to be banned from doing so. I think you will find no shortage of claims on the attached links of how evil this plant is, and what a pervasive problem it has now become in many parts of the country, including the Pacific NW.

I would appreciate a response to this email with regards to your consideration to add this plant to Oregon's invasive species list. Thank you.

Hi, Lulu. Thanks for your email. Yes, goutweed is definitely a tough customer. Without speaking for the ODA, which ultimately decides what goes on the noxious weed list, my own sense of goutweed is that, while weedy and difficult wherever it's been placed, it doesn't seem to appear "spontaneously" in new areas, like ivy and blackberry can. Although it spreads underground aggressively, it isn't moving 'by air,' which groups it with several other species that, while troublesome, are also unlikely to be listed soon. For a number of reasons, I think your conversations with nurseries about goutweed are quite valuable, and push things in the right direction.

All that being said, I appreciate the report and will keep talking about this with the invasive species community. Feel free to contact me directly at mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov, if you'd like to continue the discussion.

Many thanks...

-Mitch
