Peacock (Pavo cristatus) on Apr 10, 2011

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

Peacocks. According to neighbors, someone released a pair of peacocks a few years ago. I have seen 6 in wandering through my yard this year. A neighbor reports seeing 16. McDonald forest is adjacent to many of our properties and they are multiplying. They are often seen in with the turkeys in the area. The local turkey flock is about 70.

Karen, here's the response from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife:
Peafowl are in the same category as chickens, domestic ducks and geese, goats, sheep, and cattle as they are not wildlife and are considered livestock in that they are/were owned by someone. The peacocks have been in that area for awhile now. Although they may be on your property they are/where owned by someone and if you were to remove them someone may come out and claim ownership. The best course of action is to find out who released them and ask them to take care of them or give you permission to remove them.
