New Zealand Mudsnail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) on Jul 16, 2012

Description of specimen

One New Zealand mud snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum). I've sampled at this site in the past (2006), and re-sampled July 12th, 2012. This time I found 1 New Zealand mud snail in the sandy substrate along the edge of the shore downstream of the boat ramp. The density appeared to be very low, but I collected quantitative samples and will have a better idea of the density once samples are sorted. As far as I know, this is the first time NZMS have been found in the Siuslaw.

Commentary

Dr. Brenneis, thank you for your report of New Zealand mud snails. We have shared your report with Dr. Mark Sytsma and Robyn Draheim at PSU as well as Sam Chan at Oregon State University. To date, I am not aware of any reports of NZM in the Siuslaw, but we're checking. Lisa DeBruyckere, OISC Coordinator
