Submitter has sample
EDRR Status: Local expert notified

Description of specimen

Variagated reed canarygrass, aka "ribbon grass".

I realize this is not on the list, but appears to be spreading in Clackamas county. 2 known populations in the county.

Can see the bluish-green patches, across from the house, in the aerial map above.

Commentary

This landscape plant variety appears to be spreading in Clackamas County and the escaped populations could be eradicated now.

Is it worthwhile to do so?

Dear Ms Ko,

Thanks for reporting this infestation of ribbon grass in Clackamas County. Ribbon grass is an escaped ornamental variety of common Reed canarygrass, that is a widely distributed non-native grass in our area. For common weeds such as reed canary the resources needed to control these species greatly exceed the available. As such we must rely upon the affected landowner to actively manage thier properties to prevent the spread of these invaders.

The Clackamas County Soil and Water Conservation District currently offers technical information to local landowners to help them develop a management strategy that is effective for their particular site conditions and needs. If you own the property or know the affected landowner please contact the Conservation District for assistance in controlling this plant.

Also please check these online resources to better manage reed canarygrass on your property.

If you plan to use herbicides remember that the "Label is the Law". Follow label recommendations and restrictions at all times. The labels are designed to reduce harm to you and your property. If any information provided by the Conservation District contradicts the label, the label takes precedence. Always follow the label.

Again thank you for reporting this invader. Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,

Samuel Leininger
