Description of specimen

About 4' high x 5' wide. I'm house sitting at this address and just noticed it. It has clusters of black berries, which I will be disposing of as soon as I can find some clippers.

Commentary

Hi, Jeanne. Thanks for your report. That's definitely pokeweed and it's definitely one to watch. We typically suggest clipping berries (which you mentioned) and putting them in the trash, in case the yard debris process isn't killing the seeds. Roots can be dug up (and put in the trash) but they're substantial and will usually need an annual checkup for some time. We've also done some trials with herbicide; if you want more info on that, or if you have other questions, feel free to contact me directly at mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov.
