Birds - invasive

Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) on Nov 5, 2012

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

Mute Swan, This single swan seems to have taken up permanent residence and has been here for some time so you may already be aware of it. I only recently discovered that it was considered an invasive species.

Commentary

Thanks, Del. We will notify ODFW staff to investigate. Mute swans that are not sterileand wing-clipped are indeed invasive.

Del, thank you for your report. ODFW investigated the report and determined that no further action is needed, as this particular bird meets the condition of Controlled Species OAR 635-56-0070. Specifically, based on an interview with Dixon Bledsoe, the swan has been on the lake for over 5 years and he has never seen another swan on the lake or any offspring. Mr. Bledsoe believes the swan is a female and is known locally by the name of Gurde. He believes the swan was brought in by the original owner of the Lake, Jason Webb (deceased) somewhere between 10-15 years ago. The swan appears to be pinioned and was very tame.

Thank you again for your report, as non-pinioned paired mute swans pose a significant threat to Oregon. Reports such as yours allow us to act quickly.
