Description of specimen

9 foot tall pokeweed, sprouted in six places. Root ball the 5 inches in diameter.

Commentary

I have dug out all of the roots, but two that go under the neighbor's deck so I can not dig them out. What should I do to kill the small remaining root(s)?

Hi, Karrla. Thanks for your email. That sounds complicated. If there are only a couple roots, you might have some success just clipping them off as they emerge from under the porch next summer. Nice thing about that is the leaves can go straight into yard debris (unlike the roots and berries).

If that seems unlikely to work, drop me an email (mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov) and we can maybe talk some limited herbicide options. You'd hate for the plants to flower and drop berries under there. Given the small number of plants, total spray volume would be pretty minimal. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
