Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) on Jan 20, 2013

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

9 ft tall, umbrells on top, dried out, hollow stalk. Looks like cow parsnip but really large, and I thought it was worth checking.

Hi, Kakumyo. Thanks for your email. That looks like poison hemlock to me (Conium maculatum). Pretty weedy, and pretty common, sadly. I'd recommend some pretty aggressive work on the rosettes, but be careful of the sap. Do all the smart things and use gloves, sleeves, and boots. I think they also respond well to low doses of herbicide, but poison hemlock isn't on target lists in Oregon (though maybe Washington State or Clark County), so I'm not as familiar with that as a management strategy. Feel free to contact me at mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov if you have questions or comments.
