Description of specimen

Two different plants are growing in my front yard. I first spotted them last summer but didn't know what they were. They came back this year but haven't produced berries yet.

Commentary

Is it OK to put the plants in yard debris if there are no berries? Any other tips for getting rid of it?
Thanks

Hi, Serena. Thanks for your question. I feel like pokeweed that's still flowering is probably fine for yard debris, if we're talking about above-ground structures. The roots, though, should probably still go in the trash. That's the part the re-grows for several years if left in the ground; I think we should assume it's tough enough to survive our composting processes. We've been working a little bit on herbicide options, for plants in hard-to-reach spots. Feel free to contact me directly if you want to talk about that or if you have other questions (mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov).
