Description of specimen

Between 1-2 ft high. Small purple flowers. Each plants has several flowers heads.

Commentary

I was unable to add a photo. There is quite a lot of Canadian Thistle and I am sure other invasive species on our property. How can we eliminate these without harming the water, livestock and my birds (ducks, turkeys and chickens)?
