Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) on Feb 27, 2014

Submitter has sample

Description of specimen

About 2200 square feet of shaded backyard is covered with lesser celandine, although perhaps just 1/4 of that area was affected last year (we didn't know what it was then). It is now in the front yard as well, in clusters.

Commentary

What should I do? I am a renter, and I do not have the time money to invest in elimination of this weed. I am digging out a patch in the front yard, but I am open to help or suggestions for how to deal with the 2200 square feet in the back.

The flowers have not opened yet. If I mow them before they do, would I at least prevent seed spread?

Hi, Tiiu. Thanks for the report. I'm sorry not to get back to you sooner; something odd is going on with the system.

Lesser celandine IS a bear, and I wish I'd gotten your message sooner. Mowing has always seemed like a good way to spread stuff around, but that's a LOT of square footage to dig up. There's no city-funded control, but there may be a way to get ahead of the curve with this stuff. Drop me an email (mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov) and let's see what we can figure out.
