Originally reported as Reed Canarygrass, Ribbon or Variegated (Phalaris arundinacea var. picta)

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

The grass is tall standing with thick, hollow stalks. The blade is broad and hairless but feels rough on both sides when stroked toward the stalk. The seedheads branch off on long pedicels in alternate spikelets, almost characteristic of false brome..

Commentary

I think I also tracked it to my yard; what should i do?
I can provide a picture at a later time, if contacted, as I am at work at the moment.

Hi, Abigail. Thanks for the report. Most land managers in Portland (and probably Oregon) think of reed canarygrass as ubiquitous, though occasionally managed on a site-by-site basis.

If you think you've got it in your yard, the obvious first move is dig it out. If it's already pretty established, you'll likely need to move on to a combination of cutting and spraying. Feel free to get in touch with me directly (mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov) if you'd like discuss that at more length.

Have a good week....
