Description of specimen

This is American chestnut, Castanea dentata. Young seedlings which are in the riparian zone but which flood rarely. Plants may have been sampled by beaver. There are additional American Chestnut seedlings on the adjacent private property immediately to the west / downstream (owned by me). We assume that these are jay-planted but the seed source is unknown. As one picture shows there is is also red oak here, and as well several Eurasian tree species which may be reported separately.

Commentary

Bryon,

Thanks for the report of American Chestnut. As you know it is not a listed noxious weed, but we have seen this species naturalizing in one other location in Clackamas County. The age class you sent looks very similar to what we have seen at the other site, so we will definitely keep an eye on it. Thanks again for all of your reports.

Sam
