Land Plants - invasive

American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) on Oct 7, 2015

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

The plant is approximately 10 feet tall. There are several red root stalks I can see through the fence. There were purple berries in clusters on the ends of the branches this summer, now they have dried up. One of the branches has poked through the fence so I noticed it this year.

Commentary

This neighbor has lived in this house for less than a year. They are very kind people & great neighbors. I don't want them to get in trouble.

Hi, Celeste. Thanks for your report. Pokeweed is not a Required Eradication species in Portland, so no one's in trouble. Still, I'd encourage you and your neighbors to manage it before it becomes widespread in your neighborhood. It may be too late to clip berries off (which should go in the trash in any event), but regular cutting of the stem (which can go in yard debris) will help. We have a very basic pokeweed website on the City of Portland website [https://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/article/433182], but you're always welcome to contact me directly (mitch.bixby@portlandoregon.gov).

Thanks again for checking in....
