Hi, Sara. Thanks for your report. That looks and sounds like Empress tree, a non-native tree that's not exactly invasive, but pretty weedy: I've seen 50' tall trees along Macadam. It also has pretty vigorous roots, so if you want it to go away, you'll probably need to resort to an herbicide on the stump.
