California Prionus Beetle (Prionus californicus) on Sep 14, 2008

Description of specimen

This beetle looks exactly like a Broad-necked Root Borer, except, the color is a dark brown, vs. black. This beetle is 1.75 inches in length. It has the long antenna that the male in this species would have.

Hi Roy, Jim Young with the OSU insect identification clinic notes the following:
"It is most likely the California Prionus (Prionus californicus). It looks very much like the Broad Necked Root Borer and is common thought the Western US."
