Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) on Apr 27, 2018

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

I was doing some research for my PhD thesis and was collecting rough-skinned newts from a kayak in a cove in Tenmile Lake. I found a dead crayfish at the bottom of the lake and pulled it up with my net. I did not keep the specimen but took photos and it appears to be a red swamp crayfish due to the large bumps on its claws. Unfortunately I did not get better photos because I assumed it was the native species that a local was telling me about earlier, but realized it might be the red swamp crayfish after further inspecting the photos.

Commentary

Here is a nice document from Oregon Sea Grant about the types and distributions of our native and non-native crayfish in Oregon. https://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/sites/seagrant.oregonstate.edu/files/invasive-species/toolkit/crayfish.pdf
