Pacific Cicada-killer Wasp (Sphecius convallis) on Jun 21, 2018

Description of specimen

While on vacation in Oregon (Arlington), I believe I saw a Japanese Giant Hornet or Asian Giant Hornet. Colors are a bit different but this Hornet was big. Approx 2 inches in length. I attempted to take a close photo of the Hornet but thought it best to keep my distance. The hornet was located near the bathrooms at Earl Snell Memorial Park. Several other visitors to the park also viewed the hornet. At the time of my departure form the Park, the hornet was still alive.

Commentary

This is a Pacific cicada killer (Sphecius convallis), a native predatory wasp but not a hornet. Although they can sting they are not that aggressive (unless you're a cicada!).
