Commentary
Dear Virginia, thank you for contacting the Invasive Species hotline. Unfortunately, it is very hard to say what you have encountered without an image or a specimen on hand. Grasshoppers change their colorization during their lifetime from immature stages to adults. So, again, difficult to make a definite identification. Helmuth Rogg, Oregon Department of Agriculture

Location
Near my very small summer garden area, I noticed a grasshopper, somewhat shorter than any other grasshopper I had ever seen, which was a very color. I would describe the color as Battleship Gray. Never having seen a gray grasshopper I checked the computer which seemed to identify it as a "Differential Grasshopper." The website went on to say differential grasshoppers are found in Canada and all parts of the United States, EXCEPT the Pacific Northwest.
