Insects and Spiders - non-native

Devil's Coach Horse Beetle (Ocypus olens) on Oct 6, 2008

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

I don't know if this is invasive or not, but everything I could on it said it was native to Europe. It looks like a wingless black wasp and is just over an inch long. I think it's a Devil's coach horse beetle. I've lived in Oregon all 35 years of my life and have never seen these until now.

Commentary

Jon, thanks for your report. I have sent your photo on to the OSU insect i.d. lab and will get back to you with a response as soon as possible.

Hi Jon, the OSU insect ID clinic did indeed identify your insect as a Devil's coach horse beetle. This insect is native to Europe, however, it is well established in Oregon and Washington. Thanks for your report!
