Description of specimen
flat, shield shaped insect, six legs, long antenae. about 10mm long exluding antenae. black/brown body, stripped legs (black/white). white spotted underside,
Commentary
We have lived in the area for 20 years or so, but have only seen these in the past two or three years.
Our arborist was not familiar with it. Some very similiar individuals we've seen, are larger with chevrons on the back.

John, thank you for your report. It appears from the photo that this insect is a Pentatomid, a member of the stink bug family.
The predatory pentatomid, shield or stink bugs, have well-developed 5-segmented antennae and characteristically shield-like shape.

Location
Suburban backyard. mossy grass, 4 maple trees, a pine, couple cedars, a sycamore. specimen collected Nov, 15, 2008
