We had a large tree removed last year and tried to warn our neighbor, but he has many in his yard’s corner and they are growing and multiplying fast.

Commentary

Good morning Ms. Muir,

Thank you for taking the time to report this invasive tree to the Oregon Invasives Hotline. It is great to see local landowners taking an active role to manage invasive weeds. So I applaud your efforts.

In regards to the tree in question, it appears to be occurring on your neighbor's property. Unfortunately, since your house is in an unincorporated area of the county there are no local nuisance ordinances that would apply to your area. As such your best course of action is to initiate a conversation with your neighbor to seek workable solutions.

Tree-of-heaven can certainly be a tough plant to control. In part due to its ability to resprout after cutting. For small saplings, you can pull the plants, but for larger specimens, it is generally advised that you use a targeted herbicide application following cutting to help address regrowth.

In cooperation with our partners from the 4-County CWMA, we have published a Best Management Practices for controlling tree-of-heaven (https://4ccwma.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/4c-tree-of-heaven-bmp-17.pdf). Please take a look at the link above and share it with your neighbor.

Once again, thanks again for reporting. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have additional questions. Good luck in all your efforts.

Sam
