Description of specimen

Not sure if worms I found were jumping worm, but I've noticed some established ground cover thyme dies when temperature gets hot and when soils start to dry. There are other shallow root plants like strawberry also die out in late spring to summer.
There are always crumbly coffee grounds looking casting under the dead thyme plants and because soils are so crumbly, shallow roots are not able to stick to the ground and I find worms in a couple inches deep soil. They look wiggly when touched.
I have noticed this very active worm activity almost 5 years ago or so. I always suspicious that worms are too active and over cultivating the soil and as a result, plants are not able to stick to the ground and not get nutrition and water from the ground.
Even though I suspected this crumbly soils throughout the garden, Established deep root plants are not damaged.
