Description of specimen

This beetle is 2 and 1/2 half inches long by 3/4 inches wide. Its brown and fury under side. Long anteena and long legs with large pinchers. Google says it could possibly be a titan beetle.

Commentary

Dear Kris, this is (likely) a female California Prionus, Prionus californicus looking at the antenna. California Prionus grubs feed on partially decayed wood, especially conifer stumps. They will not attack structural timbers or buildings. These large beetles are not commonly seen, because the adults are active at night. They are occasionally attracted to porchlights as this one probably was. Thank you, Helmuth Rogg
