Dear Karey, you are correct, yes, it is the banded alder borer and no, you don't need to kill it. it is a native longhorned beetle that is not causing a big impact. You can let it go and enjoy life. Thank you, Helmuth Rogg

In general, the banded alder borer only affects already dead or downed trees and does not impact living trees. Therefore, it is not considered a tree pests.
