Commentary
Thank you for your report! Unfortunately nutria are a common sight in the Portland area and many other places in Oregon. Depending on the needs of the site and potential damage nutria are or may be causing, they are sometimes removed, but our nutria populations are healthy and others will often return. There is a lot of good information about nutria in Oregon on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Living With Wildlife site, https://www.dfw.state.or.us/wildlife/living_with/nutria.asp.
Nutria was feeding in a small rain pond along trail just West of Smith and Byee Interlake parking lot, by the canoe-shaped benches. It's the same pond where people have been seeing a Sora, we were preparing to stake it out and noticed the Nutria. It promptly swam to the bank and crossed the path right in front of us to follow a nature trail down to the main Wetlands area.
