Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) on May 22, 2009

Description of specimen

A large infestation of garlic mustard has flowered and is currently growing seeds (still green), jest east of the east end of Clara Smith Road, along the drive to the lower portion of Camp Crestveiw. This needs immeadiate attention before seeds are released. I would be happy to assist in any way I can. I live nearby and have been battling garlic mustard for a couple of years. The conservation district (or the County?) has done a nice job of controlling garlic mustard along the right-of-way of Clara Smith, but this patch is off of county property. A little effort now could go a long way in stopping this infestation. Your attention to this is greatly appreciated.

Commentary

Jim-
Thanks for reporting. Unfortunately, free control is not availabe in the area in which you have reported the garlic mustard from. In this area, control of garlic mustard (and other noxious weeds) is the responsibility of the landowner. We at the District are working on the containment of garlic mustard in the Gorge through the treatment of fringe populations. Due to the severity of garlic mustard in the Corbett area, we cannot go after it all. Please visit the weeds section of our website at www.emswcd.org/weeds to learn more about our containment project. The roadside right-of-way areas of Clara Smith and all other roads with garlic mustard will continue to be treated by the county. You could contact the owner of the property and encourage them to address the garlic mustard on their property. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Lucas
