Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

A 1.5-2” black segmented insect with two yellow stripes. It was so large I though murder hornet but it’s head section was black. The closest picture example I could find was a Cicada, but not positive that was it. I’ve lived here all my life and never seen anything like it. I unfortunately was unable to get a picture it.

Commentary

Dear Julie,
So far, we’ve had hundreds of reports of Asian giant hornet in Oregon, and luckily, none have been Asian giant hornet so far! It is very difficult to evaluate reports without images, as there are many species in Oregon that look superficially similar to true hornets.
We’ll be trapping for hornets this summer, but if you do see them again, try and (safely) get a picture and submit it at our reporting site: https://oda.fyi/HornetReport
We’ll keep your site in mind as we proceed.
We have a pest alert at: https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/shared/Documents/Publications/IPPM/AsianGiantHornetPestAlert.pdf
and a poster of commonly reported look-alikes here: AsianGiantHornetLookAlikesPoster.pdf
Have a good day and thank you for your interest in keeping invasive species out of Oregon!
