Western Cicada-killer Wasp (Sphecius grandis) on Jun 30, 2021

Originally reported as Northern Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia)

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

The flying insects were much larger than a typical wasp or yellow jacket. Abdomen width was over 1/4" and probably closer to 3/8". Overall length was ~1.5". Abdomen was a yellow alternating with black stripes and appeared bright yellow in flight. Thorax was darker orange. Head was orange/black.
In my picture the head has been smashed off. I looked online and the closest resemblance was the Asian Giant Hornet.

Commentary

Dear Matt, this looks like a cicada killer wasp, Sphecius grandis. Central Oregon has seen an outbreak of cicadas this year, which coincides with the appearance of one of its natural enemy, the cicada killer. They are relatively harmless to humans.
Thank you, Helmuth
