Dear Rob, thank you for your message and pictures. No, this is not an insect you need to kill. It is one of our native katydids, also known as longhorned grasshoppers or bush crickets. We have a very common one in eastern Oregon, the Mormon cricket, which can form large bands of marching individuals. The one in your picture is not a Mormon cricket, but in the same family of Tettigoniidae. You can let it go. Thank you, Helmuth Rogg

BTW, the"tail" is the ovipositor of the grasshopper, indicating that it is a female. With the ovipositor it lays its eggs.

It is in the genus of Idiostatus, the shield backed katydid and is native to the western US
We found in our yard this evening this very large cricket/grasshopper. It was on one of our hydrangeas. It appears to have a tail. We have never seen this before so we caught it. Not sure what it is. See pictures.
