Description of specimen

black and white beetle around three inches long. antenna about same length with black and white bands.

Commentary

Hi Paul, thank you for the report. Without a picture of the specimen, it's difficult to say exactly which species you saw, however, the banded alder borer is a possibility. The next time you see an insect like this, or another that you want identified, you can collect a specimen and send it to the OSU Insect Identification Clinic, or, if you have a camera handy, take a picture. In most cases, the OSU Insect ID staff can identify insects from photos. Thank you again for your submission and for being alert for invasive species.
