Pine Trogossitid Beetle (Temnoscheila chlorodia) on Jul 11, 2022

Description of specimen

I was unsure of whether this insect could be EAB because of the elevation, which I assumed was too high for ash trees. It was sitting on a log that had fallen over the trail. Today's news about the forest Grove sighting reminded me of this. Unfortunately I just have one picture of it.

Hopefully it's just a lookalike...

Commentary

This is native and despite it's name a beneficial predator called bark-gnawing beetle. They will commonly look for prey insects that are present attacking dead and dying trees. Please see this emerald ash borer fact sheet which shows some common look-alikes: http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/ForestBenefits/Pages/ForestHealth.aspx
