Mountain ash is not relative to true ash, emerald ash borer does not attack this this species. Mountain ash commonly has branches die back and continues to thrive.

Location
We have a mature mountain ash tree in our front yard. Just this summer I noticed the top leader is dying back. The rest of the tree looks healthy, though the trunk started leaning 10 yrs ago. No other obvious symptoms and we have not seen (or looked for) insects.
