Pigeon Horntail (Tremex columba) on Jul 25, 2022

Description of specimen

Hugest hornet I’ve ever seen. Immediately triggered memories of discussion of these Asian hornets. I googled it and it very much looks like the pigeon tremix variety. A long lean body with a pair of wings that almost look like termite wings.

Commentary

Thank you for your report! This is in fact the pigeon tremex, a native woodwasp, and not Asian giant hornet. No Asian giant hornets have been found in Oregon so far. Thanks for being on the lookout!
