Description of specimen
Large beetle. Brown/black. Approximately 2 inches in length. Large serrated antennae.
Commentary
Thank you for your report! Yes, this is the native California root-borer, Prionus californicus. They are not tree killers. Their grubs live mainly in decomposing stumps.

Location
Front porch of our home. Was drawn to the lights through the windows at night. Our property has several large trees original to the home from 1914, a large garden, native flower beds and a 20 tree orchard. We are surrounded by mainly grass fields. Located less than 1/4 mile from the Willamette river. We found one of these nettles last year on our front porch as well.
