Hornseed Buttercup (Ranunculus testiculatus) on May 2, 2008

Submitter has sample

Description of specimen

Hornseed buttercup, Ranunculus testiculata, is a widespread invasive species throughout much of eastern Oregon. I tried to get the BLM interested in it long ago, but as it is not a problem for cattle grazing, they, of course, were not interested in it. It is particularly invasive in open arid ground and can even be found in drier edges of lawns and vacant lots in La Grande and elsewhere south to Burns and beyond.

Commentary

Hornseed buttercup keeps kids from going barefoot but does not poison or is not pallatable to cattle. Is this invasive species program interested in species not considered a problem by agriculture and grazing interests?
