Red-headed Ash Borer (Neoclytus acuminatus) on Oct 6, 2022

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

My Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders led me to identify this as a Neoclytus acuminatus, but they call it a Cylindrical Hardwood Borer. I see it’s also called the Red-Headed Ash Borer.

Commentary

You are correct! This species has only been in western Oregon for about a decade. It does damage trees such as ash, but it is well established now. Thank you for your report!
