Nutria (Myocastor coypus) on Dec 14, 2009

Submitter has sample

Description of specimen

Looks like a big rat - sharp yellow teeth. Breeds like rabbit...we have a lot of them. Many people are feeding them and think they are muskrats...etc.

Commentary

They have been reported several times but no one does anything about it.

Thank you for submitting the report. Nutria are now common throughout western Oregon, and their presence in urban areas is increasing. I have actually visited this site on the Springwater Trail and spoken with the City of Gresham about this issue. Unfortunately there is no state or regional plan in place for nutria management and control. Any control at this site would have to be approved and funded by the city.

Thanks again for your efforts, and your report will be entered into the database.
