Land Plants - invasive

Knotweed (unknown species) (Fallopia sp.) on Dec 29, 2009

Description of specimen

I visited the site with Max Bennett of the OSU Extension office & he agrees that it is Knotweed although the plants are leafless, so we are unsure if it is Himalayan.

I left a voice message about this matter for Robin Taylor USFS botanist & have not heard back from her.

Please feel free to contact me @ (541) 592-9390. I am willing to dig & dispose of these weeds if necessary but could use some guidance as to how to best accomplish this as I understand these specie can propagate from stem/root fragments.

Thank you,

Mike Mitchell

Commentary

Dear Mike,

Thanks so much for reporting knotweed from the Illinois River. It sounds like this is a very high priority site to control given its location. Rivers are knotweed's primary corridors for spread, and we certainly don't want to see knotweed on the Illinois. Thanks for being willing to control it yourself, and I am glad you are seeking some guidance before getting started since, you are right, you need to be extremely cautious to avoid spreading fragments. Robin will be an excellent resource, and I will also put you in touch with Kyle Stauss at The Nature Conservancy who has a lot of experience with knotweed. Thanks again - you are a true weed warrior!
