Nutria (Myocastor coypus) on Feb 12, 2023

Submitter does not have a specimen

Description of specimen

We’ve recently seen a precipitous increase in what appear to be nutria droppings in our neighborhood. We live near a wetland. I understand nutria to be invasive to wetlands.

Commentary

Hello and thank you for your report! Nutria are common throughout the Willamette Valley, so other nutria quickly move in to replace removed animals. Management sometimes occurs if the nutria are threatening infrastructure or key habitats. People can manage nutria on their own property if they wish. The OR Dept of Fish and Wildlife has resources on living with nutria here: https://www.dfw.state.or.us/wildlife/living_with/nutria.asp. There's also a good Oregon Sea Grant guide: https://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/sites/seagrant.oregonstate.edu/files/nutria-species-guide.pdf.
