Description of specimen
Large red and black beetle, large antenna. Body/wing area is red, rest is black. Appears red pine boaring beetle. Accidentally amputated 1 leg when capturing:/
Commentary
Thank you for your report! It's hard to see through the jar, but I think that your identification is right. That looks like Stictoleptura canadensis, the "red-shouldered pine borer", one of our native pine-feeding longhorned beetles. They are not tree killers.

You bet. Let them live.
Their grubs feed on dead and decaying wood of conifers (e.g. pine and fir), so they are important to nutrient cycling. The adults feed on pollen and nectar and you might see them visiting flowers -- it's not a population explosion, you just have the right habitat for them! These guys do no harm.
