It is the California root borer, Large brown longhorn beetle

Commentary

Thank you for your report! Without a photo I can't confirm the species. The California Prionus is a widespread native species whose grubs live in decaying conifer stumps and logs.

Location

Mixed forest including hazel and wild cherry. Found on the patio at the back of the house
