Description of specimen
Thick, distinctive webbing on branches of deciduous trees. Looks like gypsy moths, maybe.
Commentary
Thank you for your report! That's not Spongy moth (=AKA "gypsy moth"), which doesn't make webs that cover the leaves. Those webs are made by the native Fall Webworm, Hyphantria cunea. Although the webs are unsightly, the caterpillars rarely defoliate trees. Insecticide treatments are not advised, because the caterpillars are protected by their webbing. Webs can be cut from the tree and destroyed. The moth is very common and lays eggs on a variety of trees.
On the apple tree on our neighbors property and a tree in the protected green space across from our house have gypsy moth nests. Lorena court is a dead end street off of 57th ave in the Solano estates in Hillsboro. There are protected green spaces across from our house in front and behind our home. Noble Woods park is not very far from our home.
