For several years I have been attempting to get rid of this weed without knowing what it is. Each spring it creeps farther into my yard despite my efforts.

Commentary

Dear Polly,

Thanks so much for reporting shining geranium. Yes, this plant is extremely difficult to control and spreads very quickly. Thanks so much for trying to keep it from spreading since we really want to prevent this plant from getting even more widespread! Please follow this link for some resources on how to control shining geranium. http://www.westerninvasivesnetwork.org/pdfs/factsheets/Shining%20Geranium_TNC_WW.pdf The problem with shining geranium is that the seeds stay alive in the soil for a long time. So, it takes persistent weeding for many years until you exhaust the seed bank. You may also want to consider heavy mulching after weeding to limit germination. Let me know if I can be of further assistance! Thanks so much and keep on reporting invasive species!
