See above. But note - it was definitely bright yellow and black. Not dull.
Commentary
Thank you for your hornet report. Unfortunately, without a photo it can be very difficult to verify the identity of the insect you saw. But please continue to be on the lookout and feel free to use our online reporting site for future sightings: https://oda.fyi/HornetReport. Luckily, no true hornets have been found in Oregon so far through either our trapping or citizen reports.
In Oregon we have many different lookalike species and this poster highlights just a few of them: AsianGiantHornetLookAlikesPoster.pdf.
Thank you for your interest in keeping invasive species out of Oregon!

Yesterday I was sorting through worm compost and a very large insect I immediately thought was a Hornet (due to its size) landed in front of me. I think it may have been a Japanese (Northern?) Giant Hornet. I have looked online at the various native wasps, including the Western Cicada Killer. The closest to what I saw is the Giant Hornet. The insect I saw was shockingly large - approx an inch and a half - no smaller. Larger than any wasp or Hornet I have seen before. I also noted the color. I knew it had to be a hornet, because if it's size, but it was bright yellow and black. Not like black hornets I have seen before. The body also had more heft to it, more like the yellow and black wasps as apposed to long and skinny. I have looked at pics of the Western Cicada Killer. Cannot say for sure it is not what I saw, but the colors on the insect in front of me (1 1/2 feet) were clearly bright yellow and black, not dull yellow or orange and black. The head was facing away from me, so I cannot be sure of the color of its head, but the body was most definitely remarkably large and bright yellow and black. I have never seen anything like it before. It flew away before I could find something within reach to contain/kill it. Yes, It was scary, so my intention was to kill it! My neighbor just happened to mention the Giant Hornet today and showed me a picture of it online. It sure looks like what I saw yesterday. Thought I should report it. You have my address above for location.
