Commentary

Thank you for your report! That is actually the "Ponderous borer", Trichocnemis spiculatus, our largest native longhorned beetle. You can admire its impressive size and watch out for its strong bite if handled (they aren't aggressive or dangerous in any other way). These beetles breed in dead and decaying conifer stumps and logs. They are important decomposers, not tree killers.
