Description of specimen

This was about an inch long. It wasn't moving much but was alive

Commentary

Yes, they are impressive! That is the "Ponderous borer", Trichocnemis spiculatus, Oregon's largest beetle. They are not pests. Their grubs live in decaying conifer stumps and logs.

Was just on the sidewalk in front of a store.
