Metallic Wood Borers (Family Buprestidae) on Sep 11, 2024

Description of specimen

The picture is of a different beetle, sorry but I didn't get a picture of the ash borer beetle. It was shaped like the one in the picture, just a bit larger, except it was colorful, like a wood duck, or male mallard duck. As I said, I thought it was a June bug, something I use to see as a child but hadn't seen in years. Except, as I said, the shape was similar to the bug shown below (a bug I haven't ID'd yet either.)

Commentary

Thank you for your report! The beetle in the picture is a native member of the Metallic wood-boring beetle family in the genus Buprestis. They are larger and less slender than EAB. They are not tree killers.

There are a number of iridescent green look-alike beetles in Oregon that are not pests. I am attaching a link to the ODA EAB webpage with some photos of Oregon insects that could be mistaken for EAB
